The Principal as Driver of Change

    Screen 3 of 4

    Unit Objectives

At the end of this unit, you will be able to accomplish the following:

    • Describe the role of the principal in leading the deep and sustainable reforms needed to achieve high standards of academic, social, and ethical development for all students.
    • Articulate the role of the principal in designing a change process to deliver steady improvement in student achievement.
    • Formulate and apply the elements of a disciplined approach for use by school leadership in driving the change process.

In this unit, we will cover the context for change, including several models used in education and corporations, and we will focus on two approaches in detail: Kotter’s model of change and Bolman and Deal’s lenses. Computer-based and classroom activities provide opportunities to apply this information and to reflect upon applications in your school.
