    Delivery & Training

    NISL works with districts and states to create a tailored implementation plan based on their leadership needs. Delivery typically consists of one of three options – train-the-trainer, direct training, or a hybrid of the two.

    Train-the-Trainer: Districts and states select local leaders to take on the task of training other principals. Selected leaders go through the full NISL Executive Development Program, plus two intensive days of facilitation training and coaching. After 29 days of face-to-face instruction and coaching, these select leaders begin training their peers, under the watchful eye of NISL faculty members. They become certified trainers once NISL faculty members are convinced that they have mastered the content and can effectively facilitate the learning of others.

    Direct Training: NISL faculty members train school leaders directly, taking them through the full 27-day program over the course of 15-18 months.

    Hybrid Option: A NISL faculty member teams up with one or more NISL-certified trainers to facilitate the training of other school leaders in a state or district.

    Significantly less expensive than all other methods for training large groups.

    Most cost effective option for smaller groups.

    Less expensive than direct training if certified trainers are available.

    Local trainers have the best grasp of local culture, rules, and regulations.

    National experts bring new ideas and perspectives.

    Best of both worlds – local trainer and national expert.

    Time Required

    Quickest way to train large groups of leaders across states or districts.

    Quickest way to train small groups of leaders.

    Duration of the program can be tailored to meet the needs of the client and the new trainers.

    Other Considerations

    Builds local training capacity.

    Ensures consistent quality in content and delivery.

    Provides additional training experience for local trainers.

    Statewide Success

    Massachusetts and Pennsylvania are two states that have taken advantage of NISL’s train-the-trainer approach to roll out training to hundreds of principals and other school leaders. NISL has not only given their principals important knowledge and skills they need to improve instruction and student achievement, but also created a culture that emphasizes the importance of effective leadership.
